The Challenge
In this section: North Pole | South Pole
In light of my complete lack of previous polar experience and limited ultra-endurance expertise most friends and family have questioned my sanity when I have mentioned my intention to ski to the North Pole in April, a prelude to skiing to the South Pole in December.
Why the Poles?
In Summer 2003, my father was diagnosed with Huntington's Disease. At a similar time, we became aware that a different immediate member of my family was suffering from Mental Health problems.
I was living in Australia at the time and vowed to myself that on my return to London I would commit significant time and effort to raise awareness of these illnesses and money for related charities.
That was the easy part.
Less so was identifying an appropriate means to raise awareness and money, and finding the right time to do so.
To be honest, I struggled with the concept of asking people to make donations to my chosen charities and felt that the best way to overcome this was to embark on a challenge that would test me to my physical and mental limits, thereby overcoming any personal pride or embarrassment.
Hence, the idea of skiing to South Pole was born, which has since evolved into skiing to both the North Pole and the South Pole in the same calendar year.
I have little doubt that I will find the physical and mental challenges of skiing to the Poles in some of the harshest conditions possible the ultimate test of my resolve and determination. I hope that you will support me in my quest and thank you in advance to all that do.
